Awards Officer Election November 2024 – Candidate Manifestos
Lorna Linch
As a long-standing member of the QRA (18 years) I am enthusiastic to take up the important role of Awards Officer. The QRA has been central to my research collaboration and progression. I have attended numerous QRA field trips and conferences and have gratefully received several QRA awards. Being Awards Officer is a way for me to give back to the QRA as a ‘thank you’ for all the opportunities it has given me. It will also mean I can be proactively involved in giving others, especially ECRs and those with limited research opportunities (e.g. parents, part-time), the same inclusive support I have received. I have much peer-review experience of journal articles (e.g. QSR, Boreas) and conference abstracts (e.g. INQUA). I have been PI on projects for which I have managed budgets successfully. Finally, I have prior experience of the executive committee, in my role as QRA postgraduate representative (2007-2009).
Benjamin Newsome-Chandler
I am standing for the role of Awards Officer as I would like to contribute to, and support, a community that has been a central part of my early career, including through the awards processes. I am particularly keen to work with the Executive Committee to embed EDI practices within awarding processes, including developing transparent review and decision processes that build on previous committee work and address any remaining potential for bias. This is with the aim of ensuring that the awards processes enable and celebrate the diversity of researchers in our field, from postgraduates (e.g. through the New Research Workers Grant) to established colleagues (e.g. through the James Croll Medal). My relevant experience includes reviewing grant proposals for national and international funding councils/bodies (e.g. Narodowe Centrum Nauki), and supporting postgraduate students in applications for small grants nationally and internationally.
