QRA Field and Technical Guides

The QRA publishes its Field Guide and Technical Guide Series.  The Field Guides and Technical Guides which can be ordered using the order form.

Field Guides are produced to accompany QRA field Meetings (usually 2 or 3 each year) and are designed to provide brief descriptions of locations and a summary of the latest research on that site. A large number of field guides are currently available covering locations ranging from The Shetland Isles to Jersey and Cumbria to East Anglia.

A digitally reprinted Technical Guide 7 (Description & Analysis of Quaternary Stratigraphic Field Sections) is now available once more (click here for more details)

Technical Guides are an occasional series of publications focusing on technical aspects of Quaternary research, providing comprehensive reviews of analytical techniques and case studies of their application. Seven Technical Guides are currently available, with further titles due for publication in the forthcoming months.

Second edition of (or replacement for) Technical Guide No. 3

Clast Lithological Analysis
(or perhaps a new guide on clast analysis)

TG3, first published in 1986 and long out of print, is ripe for updating and replacement. Despite technological advances, the analysis and identification of clasts of all sizes remain important techniques in Quaternary research, useful as aids to description and often valuable for interpretation.

The intention in this updated volume is to expand the coverage to include heavy-mineral analysis and sand grain shape analysis. Hopefully users of these methods, which were not included in 1986, will step forward and volunteer some text. The plan is to retain the three-section format:

Section, 1 – Descriptions of and recommendations for procedures, will be updated and expanded to include the smaller sand-sized clasts. Comments and suggested updates from interested parties would be welcomed.

Section 2, comprising separately authored contributions describing specific methods within the umbrella of clast analysis, requires a complete update. Contributions would be very welcome, especially on heavy mineral analysis and sand grain surface analysis, as well as the other methods that were included in the first edition.

Section 3 will again consist of case studies illustrating the uses of clast analysis. A completely new set of case studies is required. Those from outside Britain would be particularly welcome.

Anyone interested in contributing to this project should contact David Bridgland, preferably by e-mail: d.r.bridgland@dur.ac.uk

Further Comment from DB: I had been hoping that some budding newcomer would come along and propose to compile a new TG3 or similar. Given the urgency for a new version, I shall now bite the bullet and do the update myself, unless you are that awaited person, in which case please get in to
