6th - 14th August 2008

At the 33rd IGC in Oslo there will be a session on 'Arctic and Antarctic records of deglaciation since the Last Glacial Maximum: processes, timing and casues' (session AAB-01)

Summary of session:

In recent years there has been a rapid increase in the quantity of age data from both polar regions constraining changes during the last deglaciation. The aim of this session is to bring together marine and terrestrial scientists who are working on deglaciation records from opposite ends of the Earth. Records of interest have been obtained from marine and lake sediment cores, ice cores, surface exposure age dating, studies of relative sea level changes, and geodetic GPS data. Insights regarding the dynamics of, and basal processes beneath, the ice sheets immediately prior to deglaciation have been obtained through analysis of former basal surfaces revealed by ice retreat, using swath bathymetry and remote sensing data. Filling some of the large gaps in the geographic distribution of records involves fieldwork in remote and hostile environments. Through comparing the latest records, and considering outputs from ice sheet models designed to assimilate new age data, it is hoped new insights will emerge regarding issues such as leads and lags between different ice sheets, the importance of sea level changes in interlocking changes in the ice sheets, rates of change in ice volume, and the feedbacks responsible for rapid changes after the Last Glacial Maximum.

Conveners:
Rob Larter, British Antarctic Survey (rdla@bas.ac.uk) Dag Ottesen, Norwegian Geological Survey (dag.ottesen@ngu.no)
